In response to the Hong Kong Museum Festival 2023, Heritage of Mei Ho House will present a special programme titled “Time・Place・Community of Mei Ho House” in November, allowing the public to step inside Mei Ho House, explore the history of this building, and gain deeper insights into the community stories.

From November 1st to November 30th, the Heritage of Mei Ho House will feature a special “Your Message for Sham Shui Po”. This is open to the public, allowing you to share your vision of Sham Shui Po. You can write your hopes for the future of Sham Shui Po, how you envision it should be, or even draw your depiction of Sham Shui Po as you imagine it. Drop your message in the collection box, and it may be featured on the exhibition board. As well as sharing your ideas, include your name and email address and the most creative winner will receive a mystery souvenir!

*Messages with violent, discriminatory, or inappropriate content will be removed.

“Corner of Sham Shui Po” Community Photography Exhibition

Discover the captivating blend of old and new in Sham Shui Po. To encourage the public to explore every corner of Sham Shui Po and document different aspects of the community, Heritage of Mei Ho House presents the “Corner of Sham Shui Po” theme. Join our community photo exhibition by submitting mobile phone photos from November 1st to November 26th. Your photos may be displayed during the Mei Ho House Open Day (2-3 December), which includes a voting activity for the public to choose their favourite entries. The top three selected entries will receive a mystery souvenir!

Photo Submission Details:
1. The entry must be taken with a mobile phone, with a 4:3 aspect ratio. No professional cameras are allowed. The photo file should be in JPEG or JPG format and should not exceed 10MB.
2. Each participant can submit only one photo.
3. The photo should authentically represent your perspective of a corner of Sham Shui Po.
4. Basic adjustments for color balance, sharpness, and brightness are allowed, and minor cropping is acceptable.
5. Email your entry to [email protected] with the subject “Submission for ‘Corner of Sham Shui Po’ Community Photography Exhibition.”
6. The submission deadline is 11:59 PM on November 26th.

Time – Exploring History
You will embark on a journey through time-related to Mei Ho House, from the birth of this resettlement building to the way of life of its former residents, gaining an understanding of the transformation of this historic building.

Back to the Days at Mei Ho House

Let’s become time travelers together and journey back to the 1960s to experience a nostalgic day at Mei Ho House. This event features various activities that offer a glimpse into the past, allowing both children to learn about life in the past and parents to reminisce about the old days. Participants even could create a “souvenir” from the 1960s with their own hands.

Thematic Talk: Exploring the Origins of Mei Ho House

Public housing in Hong Kong has provided homes for over two million of people, evolving with various designs over time, including the Slab Block, Twin Tower Block, H-Block, I-Block, Trident Block, Harmony Block, Non-standard Block, and more. Have you ever thought about the design origins of Mei Ho House (Mark I resettlement building), which is regarded as the prototype of public housing in Hong Kong? What are the origins of its design?

Dr. Rosman Wai, a former architect with over 30 years of experience in the Housing Department and currently an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Faculty of Architecture, The University of Hong Kong, will take us on a journey to discover the design origins of Mei Ho House and the development of public housing in Hong Kong.

Mei Ho House Human Library

Mei Ho House Human Library is open for a limited time, and former residents will become a “book”! Each ‘book’ has a unique background, life experiences, and stories to share, all connected by the shared ‘home’ of Sham Shui Po. The only rule in this library is mutual respect. Within the allotted time, engage in conversations and learn from these ‘books’. How much knowledge you gain depends on your curiosity and interaction!

Sham Shui Po, an iconic Hong Kong locale, has charmed tourists and even Hollywood. Local filmmakers are also drawn to its unique atmosphere and cultural diversity. Recent years have seen an increase in local films shot here, like “Drifting” on homelessness and “The Narrow Road” highlighting grassroots stories during the pandemic. Join us for a guided tour with renowned YouTuber HEBEFACE, who authored books on Hong Kong’s film locations. Explore Sham Shui Po’s cinematic spots and delve into captivating cinema discussions.

Thematic Talk – Unveiling Corner Houses in Sham Shui Po

Walking through the intersections of Pei Ho Street, Un Chau Street, or Nam Cheong Street in Sham Shui Po, it’s easy to spot the corner houses that have stood for over half a century. These buildings have various shapes, including round, square, or triangular, and they intersect with other buildings, forming a unique urban landscape.

The “Hong Kong Corner Houses” (@hkcornerhouses) page was launched in 2019, focusing on photographing and documenting corner buildings in the city. Billy Cheng, the founder of the page, will share the background and origins of the corner houses, and use the Sham Shui Po as an example, providing an overview of the historical and cultural significance of the buildings, and unravelling the mystery of these corner buildings!

Ever wished to bring beautiful things and architecture back home? This workshop invites seasoned artist Mr. Alexis Ip to lead participants in creating Fotomo (3D photo models). Layer your photos to turn flat images into captivating 3D models. While there might not be time to use your own photos, you’ll get to select from three unique scenes. Additionally, there’s a special part to make your Fotomo one-of-a-kind, exclusively yours.

Quiet Drawing under Nam Mo Hill

You may have been to Garden Hill before, did you know that it’s also known as Nam Mo Hill? In this event, we will be led by an instructor to experience a mindfulness walk. Leave your phones behind and focus on the present moment, feeling each step and embracing the environment around you. Ascend Garden Hill, collect materials on the hill, and then return to Mei Ho House to create art with plants, collectively completing an artwork. Enjoy the process of drawing with an open heart and let go of your obsession.
