1,300 nature lovers showed their support for conservation and backpacker culture by participating in the annual Ngong Ping Charity Walk (NPCW) 2013 organised by the Hong Kong Youth Hostels Association (HKYHA) and Ngong Ping 360 on Sunday. They were joined by Mr. Paul Chan Mo-po, Secretary for Development of the HKSAR government, who experienced the new “Leisure 11km” route and encouraged the public to learn more about the distinctive natural and historical attractions of Lantau Island.

Other than the hiking teams from overseas youth hostels, over 60 participants from The Hong Kong Society For the Deaf and The Hong Kong Society for the Blind also joined the Charity Walk for the first time, enjoying the fun of outdoor activities in nature. The funds raised will be used for supporting the operation of HKYHA and youth programmes.

“The Government is committed to implementing various initiatives on environmental protection and heritage conservation so as to foster a greening and quality environment for the people of Hong Kong,” said Mr. Paul Chan Mo-po, Secretary for Development at the opening ceremony.

Michael Wong Yick-kam, chairman of HKYHA, said at the event: “We are pleased to see this annual event supported by different ages of the general public. This year we are grateful to have sponsors subsidising over 60 participants from The Hong Kong Society For the Deaf and The Hong Kong Society for the Blind to join, helping us promote healthy outdoor activities to wider horizons of the community.”

After touring the YHA Mei Ho House Youth Hostel exhibition at the opening ceremony, Mr. Chan and attending guests joined the “ Leisure 11km ” charity walk and appreciated the refreshing natural landscape of North Lantau  Country Park. Event Ambassador of NPCW 2013 Sugar Club was present to cheer the participants. Other attending guests include NPCW 2013 Honorary Advisors Dr Rebecca Lee Lok-sze and Chung Kin-man,  and NPCW 2013 Organizing Committee Chairman Imma Ling.
