Here comes the second “destination of the month”– Taiwan! You might have visited Jiufen area for countless times, but have you challenged all these best dishes recommended by locals?

Yuyuan (Taro balls)

If you happen to come to Jiufen, don’t miss this famous dessert “Yu Yuan”! In this small town, you’ll find numerous Yu Yuan shops, which are open 24/7/365. You don’t even have to worry about fitting your traveling schedule to its best season, because it tastes just as wonderful in a piping hot bowl of red bean soup in the wintertime as it does with a plate of shaved ice on a hot summer day. Google it!

Uncle’s fish balls

Operating since the 35th year of the Republic, the shop is now offering a total of four dishes:

1) glass noodles in soup

2) fish ball soup

3) glass noodles with fish balls

4) dried tofu wrap

Among all, their signature set, which is also the most popular, is “glass noodles in soup+ fish ball soup”.“Glass noodles with fish balls” is another item that’s on customers’ top list – smooth glass noodles and bouncy fish balls soaked in flavorsome soup. Add some pepper too, and it would push the richness to a celestial level.

The shop is always full house during peak hours, while during weekends, there are even larger floods of people. Speaking of the restaurant decoration, the most spectacular part is that one of the walls is made up of huge bricks. Instead of calling it an antique design, I’d say the shop seems to have frozen itself at a certain point in the past, bringing food cravers back to the good old days with its nostalgic cuisine.

Yu Wan Bo Zi (Uncle Fishball)

Red yeast Ba-wan (meatballs)

From preparing to fermenting to wrapping the meatballs, all processes are done by hands. Red yeasts are specially picked when the fall season ends, and carefully sealed after fermentation; the meat is a high-quality pick of picnic shoulder meat which is soaked into the red yeast one after one, so that all flavors seep in evenly and the texture can be kept soft and tender; the wrap is not a random choice either – it is made of three different kinds of powders including potato starch, sweet potato starch and rice flour, which work together to make a smooth and chewy wrap; Last but not least, the sauce is also specially made to create a flawless blend with the meatballs.

Look at these lovely chubby meatballs, wanna give them a big bite eh?
