Memories, Bitter, Miss, Sweet: The Past and Future of Herbal Tea Shops

「憶苦思甜」:涼茶舖的過去與未來Poster

Back then, people often visited herbal tea shops to enjoy a cup of bitter herbal tea for healing or vitality. They would also chat with friends in the shops and enjoy various pastimes, such as listening to radio programmes, watching TV, and playing music on jukeboxes. The latest issue of Post41 focuses on herbal tea shops, telling the story of Wai Long Hou Herbal Tea, a long-established shop in Sham Shui Po, and exploring the cultural significance and collective memories of herbal tea shops through oral history shared by former resident.

This thematic talk is honored to invite Dr. Tang Ka Jau, Council Member of the Society of Hong Kong History and author of 《香港非物質文化遺產系列:涼茶》, as our guest speaker. Dr. Tang will share his expertise on herbal tea culture, trace the historical development of herbal tea shops, and examine how these spaces evolved into social interaction and leisure hubs. He will also discuss how such shops have adapted in response to changing times, guiding us through their historical journey and highlighting their cultural value.
