Introduction

This teaching kit includes both Chinese and English version, it aims to provide inquiry-based and all-rounded learning activities for primary and secondary school students under the theme of continuing the history and culture of Shek Kip Mei and Mei Ho House. The design of learning activities focuses on enriching students’ learning based on the current syllabi of different subjects. Teachers can adopt this teaching kit directly or use it as a reference for school-based learning activities.

This teaching kit offers four different sets of teaching plans for different year levels:

This teaching kit emphasizes the importance of facilitating students the skill of “learning to learn”. It guides students to practice active and self-regulated learning and turn acquired knowledge into their own experience through analyses. The content of this course is student-centred in the sense that students actively construct knowledge, explore the issues and think independently.  This teaching kit does not stress getting the model answers, as certain things or events do not have a definite and objective solution. In this regard, students have to analyze according to the particular problem and seek the most suitable solution, or establish their own beliefs and values. In general, the features of this kit are as follows:

The unit method: fitting the needs of each course

Each level’s teaching kit contains five independent units. Teachers can choose and adjust relevant teaching plans and materials according to the students’ level and the lessons’ needs, matching the students’ progress. They can also teach the five units in an ascending order of difficulty, introducing to students the history and culture of Shek Kip Mei and Mei Ho House and the spirit of Hong Kong.

Step by step: knowledge and moral education are equally important

This teaching kit adopts the four steps of Knowledge, Emotion, Attitude and Practice to teach students at the levels of knowledge and moral education. Each unit is led by a historical event in which students first learn more about Shek Kip Mei and Mei Ho House at the level of knowledge, then followed by oral history. The oral history captures the intertwining emotions, lets students understand the hard life of residents then and shows them the spirit of Hong Kong through these residents. In-class activities afterwards also help students to establish the correct values and encourages them to apply the learned skills and knowledge.

Interactive teaching and inquiry-based learning

This plan is student-centred and teaches students to assume self-regulated learning with guided learning strategies. Unlike traditional one-way teaching mode, this teaching kit emphasizes teacher-student interactions. Apart from learning new knowledge, students can also learn data collection and analysis methods through activities such as in-class discussion, role play and debate. In this way, their communicative and presentation skills are enhanced.

Training critical thinking through diversified learning and teaching resources

Critical thinking is the emphasis of Liberal Studies. In view of that, this teaching kit has gathered a wide variety of materials for inspiring students, including raw materials (e.g. old photos, old newspapers), multimedia resources (e.g. video clips, PowerPoints and comics), statistics, government documents, etc.

With reference to the Independent Enquiry Study (IES) in the senior secondary curriculum, this kit provides an “IES Self-learning Corner” which guides students to do enquiry studies. Methods of information collection and information analysis are also offered to help students to practice IES.

Application of learned skills through oral history interviews

Oral history is based on people’s recount of their personal life and experience. Through conducting an in-depth interview, students can apply skills learned in class and seek new perspectives in interpreting well-known historical events as well as exploring pieces of neglected history. On top of that, students can also have a better understanding of their elderly relatives and in turn develop closer relations with them.
