1) Ngong Ping 360 Ngong Ping 360 is a dynamic new tourism experience, which combines a stunning 5.7km cable car journey with an impressive cultural themed village and easy access to the Tian Tan Buddha Statue, the world's largest, seated, outdoor, bronze Buddha statue. The Ngong Ping Cable Car travels between its Tung Chung and Ngong Ping Cable Car Terminals. It is a visually spectacular 25-minute experience providing panoramic views of the Tian Tan Buddha Statue, the flora and fauna of the beautiful North Lantau Country Park, Tung Chung Bay and the Hong Kong International Airport. 2) Visit the world's largest Buddha statue. The site of the Tian Ta Buddha (opening 10:00 hours - 18:00 hours) provides visitors with a commanding view over the Shek Pik Reservoir and to the South Lantau coast beyond and draws a steady stream of devotees to this upland plateau throughout the year. 3) The nearby Po Lin Monastery (opening 09:00 hours -18:00 hours) is perhaps the best known of the many monasteries in Hong Kong and is the area's principal attraction together with the Tian Ta Buddha. The air of tranquility within the monastery grounds and the fragrance of burning incense sticks is appealing to Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike.
4) Explore the Buddhist Walk (Chinese Language only) to Tung Chung. 5) Climb the adjacent Lantau Peak. This is not an exercise for the faint hearted for the almost vertical, ancient stone steps leading up to this commanding mountain top from the Ngong Ping plateau strain every sinew within one's legs! It is, however, well worth the effort for the view from the summit is truly spectacular and on a clear day one can see much of Lantau and the surrounding seas and islands. Many enthusiasts commence this hike in darkness in order to reach the peak in time to see the sun rise over the South China Sea. 6) Walk down the more gentle trail to the Shek Pik Reservoir. This is a particularly scenic and easy hike suitable for all ages and passes through some of the few remaining remnants of once extensive pine plantations in Hong Kong. 7) Take a scenic bus ride to Tai O. This is a traditional fishing village that retains much of its original character and charm despite having to contend with an increasing number of local and overseas visitors. Of particular interest are the unique stilt houses built out over the central creek by local fishing families who fiercely resist all attempts to relocate them in modern, utilitarian public housing. Dried sea food is available from street stalls. 8) Explore the Tai O Wetland Ecotour trail and learn about the many fascinating marine creatures that inhabit the area's mangrove plantations. 9) Have a swim on Cheung Sha beach. This is a long and beautiful strip of beach on the South side of Lantau Island that provides enjoyable and safe swimming throughout much of the year. Access is by bus from Ngong Ping but those who undertake the hike down to Shek Pik reservoir may continue left along the water catchment, drop down to Tong Fuk village and follow the road left for a short distance until the beach is reached. 10) Explore different stages of the 75km Lantau Trail. This hiking trail commences and finishes at Mui Wo (Silvermine Bay) and encompasses Lantau's two principal mountains, Sunset Peak and Lantau Peak, as well as much of the Southern coastline including the ruined Fan Lau fort and the scenic Chi Ma Wan peninsular. 11) Enjoy a barbeque in the hostel grounds. Food may be purchased in Mui Wo (Silvermine Bay) or Tung Chung. |
